Foreign language knowledge - facts and statistics

 

Croatian / Serbian / Bosnian / Montenegrin

Speakers of Croatian language are very well understood (almost 100%) in Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, since the languages in use in these countries are almost entirely mutually intelligible. Also, because of recent history, a significant proportion of Croatians can read and use Cyrillic alphabet (in use in Serbia and some parts of Bosnia). Croatians use Latin alphabet. Because of all of these reasons,  Your Croatian employees can represent Your interests on all these markets very well.

English

Out of sum of people in Croatia that speak at least one foreign language,  58% of them are familiar or are fluent in English. This is especially the case in the north-western part of the country (where City of Koprivnica is located) and south (major tourist areas). In these parts, 67% of the population identified themselves as speakers of English language (auto perception).

German

German language holds second place of foreign languages in Croatia. About 37% of the citizens who use some foreign language declares them selves as familiar or fluent in German. The best knowledge of German is in the north-west region (51% of the population of the northern region have expressed that they are familiar with that language).

Italian

The third language which the citizens of Croatia are familiar with, is the Italian language. 23% of them. Citizens of Istria and Kvarner costline (northern Adriatic, close to Italy) areas are the best and the most frequent practicians of that language (in some areas as high 60% of population). In the region of north-west, about 18% of the population is familiar with that language.

Spanish

The fourth place is taken by the Spanish language with about  9% the speakers.

Russian

On the fifth place is Russian. About 7% of people who know a foreign language, is familiar with Russian. It is most represented is in our region (north-west) with about 12% of speakers.

Other languages

2% of citizens of Croatia who use foreign language have expressed that they know French or Hungarian language, while the other languages are represented with about 1% or less.
